Greetings, Flower Friends!

We are Emi and Ralf, the flower farming couple that proudly owns and operates Black Haus Blooms, a specialty cut flower farm & floral design boutique located in Earlysville, Virginia.

Our 2.3-acre micro-farm is in the Charlottesville area of Albermarle County, located 15 minutes northwest of the University of Virginia.

We are honored to operate on our very own micro-farm, where we strive to produce only the highest quality, freshest, healthiest, organic, beautiful blooms and goods for the local Charlottesville area.

  • Hearing Emi’s family's stories of our past generations’ successes and failures in their farming has always sparked interest in her personal gardening journey. She remembers the days when she was a young girl building and planting in small garden boxes in the side yard with her parents, then again all together when she and Ralf purchased her first house with a yard. We love watching the seeds grow into magical plants that provide the most delicious produce and stunning blooms.

In 2019, things really started to shape, bloom, and scale when we jumped head-first into a serious experimental year of flower farming; sowing, growing, harvesting, and designing. We created a germination rack room to sow seeds in our second-floor spare bedroom, filled 20-gallon grow bags with soil on our front lawn’s hill, and planted seedlings everywhere in our tiny yard to dip our toes into Emi’s floral dream.

From that moment on, Emi was hooked. She volunteered at local flower farms to gain hands-on experience and mentoring, enrolled in online courses and workshops, read every flower book she could get her hands on, scrolled endlessly on social media, and watched YouTube videos from other farmers who all graciously shared their knowledge and encourage new farmers to never stop learning. Ralf was always supportive and wholeheartedly along for the ride!

  • Emi has always been fascinated with nature, especially flowers. Each flower’s uniqueness never fails to inspire her creativity. She loves the fact that there are endless possibilities when designing and every single bloom, even the “flawed” stem, is incredibly beautiful and one-of-a-kind. There are so many incredibly special moments when farming flowers, but one of her favorites is experiencing a deep spark of joy when she grabs her snips to harvest a wondrously stunning bloom that she started from a tiny seed weeks before. Many times, Emi catches herself in a stillness, a connective pause, to admire its beauty in the present moment. Flowers have a special way of connecting with us and through these unique moments, we believe we strengthen our awareness of the surrounding nature.

  • Did you know that over 80% of flowers purchased in the United States are grown overseas? These flowers are raised with heavy use of dangerous pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.

Additionally, there are very poor labor conditions for those who work on the farm.

These flowers also travel miles and miles to get to your local store, producing unnecessary carbon emissions. When they do get here after the long journey, they are typically already a week old, which means their vase life will be just a couple of days when they make it to your home.

Purchasing flowers from Black Haus Blooms will not only give you peace of mind that they’re free of harmful chemicals, but also that your new flowers will last long in a vase for you to admire. We promise they’ll have a one of a kind of scent, color, and variety that you can't find in a store.

  • At Black Haus Blooms, we only use organic methods of growing flowers. We do not use any harmful, toxic chemicals, unlike those found in many grocery stores. Our bouquets and arrangements are safe to sniff; so much so that you are free to bury your nose into it without a worry!

In addition to our customers’ safety, Emi deeply cares for and appreciates the countless pollinators and beneficial insects that stop by our blooms and make their home here on the farm. The safety of our farm’s ecosystem is another reason why we do not use chemicals. These magnificent creatures help us out by providing natural pollination and keeping our harmful pest population down. This is their home as well and we are conscious of keeping them healthy and safe.

  • The local flower movement, similar to the local food movement, encourages consumers to question the origins and impact of the flowers they buy. You could say that it is a form of activism, as you are buying from a local farmer instead of an overseas-produced bouquet of harsh chemicals, exploitative labor practices, a huge carbon footprint due to shipping.

When you choose to purchase your flowers from Black Haus Blooms, you become a supportive part of this new movement toward sustainably/ecologically responsibly grown, locally sourced, seasonal flowers! Thank you for choosing local flowers and supporting your local community!

Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.
